You may be darn cute but you’re not an energizer bunny!

Do you experience some of these challenges?

You’re not an energizer bunny.

This is the distinguishing characteristic of an introvert. You easily become over-stimulated and prefer quiet. In fact, you recharge your batteries by being alone. Because you are an internal processor you need time to reflect, process, and de-stress. And, yes, you actually like people. You simply prefer to interact with only a few at a time. It’s okay that you’re not an energizer bunny. You can find your own natural rhythm.

You fear something is wrong with you.

You may fear you can’t succeed because there’s something wrong with you. I get it. I used to feel the same way. However, it’s simply not the truth. The secret? You have to learn to stop fighting your nature and comparing yourself to extroverted professionals. You have unique gifts to contribute. You are a great problem solver. You’re compassionate, empathetic, an excellent listener, and you think before acting.

Marketing is scary.

Marketing is scary. I understand. It’s uncomfortable to network because you socialize differently than extroverts, preferring one-on-one company . Small talk feels frivolous. You want to get to the heart of the matter quickly. You avoid visibility. You get nervous making presentations or speeches. But you can develop strategies and business goals that match your introverted, sensitive nature. Marketing done the right way for you allows you to create lasting impressions.

You are at risk for burnout.

You are driven. You push yourself hard. You override the cues from your nervous system and don’t allow yourself enough rest or downtime. You struggle with managing stress. It’s hard to say no and hold boundaries. You often take on more than your share of work. You lack the proper support systems or community of like-natured professionals. You may be in a work environment that doesn’t match your values. However, you can become well-resourced and develop resiliency.

You feel that you can’t succeed because of your introversion or high sensitivity.

I was told I couldn’t succeed in business because of my introversion. That turned out to be poppycock! I’ve been a successful entrepreneur since 1993. Did you know that research shows that introversion brings many positive benefits, including creativity, innovation, perseverance, and high performance? You also weigh options carefully and collaborate well, making you a natural leader. You notice details and connections others don’t, putting you ahead of the game. Introverts and HSPs in business can rock it!

You get highjacked.

There are one or two “zones” of your life where things just aren’t coming together. In fact, you may have moments--or entire relationships—that make you feel like you’ve been hijacked. Like the powerful, confident part of you has been tossed out of the driver’s seat, and you barely recognize the fearful, doubtful, or vulnerable person who’s sitting there in your place. You can learn to get back into the driver’s seat and stay there.

Introverts can be mistaken as extroverts

Many of my acquaintances are shocked when I share that I am an introvert because I have strong social skills and I enjoy engaging. I appear at ease singing jazz in public, posting silly videos on social media, or performing Argentine tango. But this was not always the case. I used to be a shrinking violet. I did everything I could to hide the fact that I had constant butterflies and knots in my stomach. I was scared of failure, so I worked hard at perfectionism and trying to be everything to everyone.
